What we call “human rights” …refers, metaphysically, to the rights of a human being who has the seed of God within him and who must be allowed the conditions to strive for the development of his relationship to what is highest in himself and in creation. An individual must be free not only to buy things and to own things, but free to think and make moral decisions and conduct his or her own life in a way that does justice to the whole of human nature. Outer liberty is necessary so that inner liberty can be sought. There is no higher justification for this than this.
